Why use silicone gel for scars?

Discover how silicone gel helps improve scar appearance, when to start using it and what precautions to follow.

Why use silicone gel?

Silicone gel is a first-line treatment recommended in international scar management guidelines for the prevention and management of hypertrophic scars and keloids. It forms a thin protective layer over the scar that helps maintain skin hydration, which may improve scar appearance and reduce symptoms such as redness, itching, discomfort and tightness. With regular use, silicone gel may help soften and flatten raised scars as they mature.

When should I start?

Apply silicone gel only after the wound is fully healed and closed, with no open areas, scabs or signs of infection. Follow the instructions provided with the product or by your healthcare professional.

Stop using silicone gel and seek medical advice if you experience significant skin irritation, worsening redness, rash, skin breakdown or signs of infection.

For best results, use silicone gel consistently as directed and as part of your overall scar care plan.
